Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of the subsidy and the technical efficiency of rice farmers in the Office du Périmètre Irrigué de Baguinéda (OPIB). The study focused on a sample of 134 rice-farming operations benefiting from the subsidy scheme. The analyzed inputs and outputs were selected based on farm size. A stochastic production frontier estimated by the maximum likelihood method was applied. The initial microeconomic approach involved two steps: estimating the stochastic production frontier, followed by a regression of efficiency scores on a set of explanatory factors to identify potential determinants. However, this second step was omitted, as the average technical efficiency obtained was remarkably high and close to 1. Data processing and statistical analysis were performed using STATA 17, SPSS 21, CSPRO, and Excel 2012 software. The average farm size is 1.59 ha, with a minimum recorded area of 0.20 ha. In irrigated rice farming, the yield reaches 3,873 kg/ha with the subsidy, compared to 3,122 kg/ha without the subsidy. The estimations indicate that a 1% increase in labor cost leads to a -3.377% decrease in rice productivity. This coefficient is statistically significant at the 10% level, revealing that labor constitutes the most sensitive input and has a negative impact on the farmers' productivity.
